The local government areas for Doreen are the City of Whittlesea and the Shire of Nillumbik. Doreen recorded a population of 21,298 at the 2016 Census. Doreen is unusual in that the eastern portion in the Shire of Nillumbik remains rural, being contiguous with the rural localities of Yarrambat and Nutfield.
